Vidyapith Activities

Hobby Club Movement

“The young student secretly craves for a freedom of choice and selection and sense of fun and amusement in the course of his serious studies that are usually of a set routine pattern... If knowledge is power, necessity is the mother of invention, and practice makes one perfect, - we can surely expect that a true hobby embodies the knowledge and practice of inventive genius and originality, the pursuit of which will lead to the fulfillment of a latent need and to the manifestation of potential power and perfection.”

- Swami Vandanananda, General Secretary (1980), Ramakrishna Math and Mission

“A hobbyist fills his unoccupied time with some favourite avocation. But hobby becomes meaningful when expressed through creative activity. It becomes then a source of joy and can develop knowledge, skill, mind and character in an easy and non-formal way. It is not then taxing like a task and one is not haunted by the sense of duty and responsibility.”

- Swami Prabhananda, Secretary (1980), Ramakrishna Mission Vidyapith,Purulia

At Ramakrishna Mission Vidyapith, students are encouraged to explore their personal interests and talents through a variety of hobby classes held weekly. These sessions offer a creative break from routine academics, fostering joy and self-expression without the pressure of formal assessment. Under the guidance of skilled teachers, boys can pursue hobbies in areas like Indology, Bengali, Hindi, English, Sanskrit, Physics & Electronics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Life Science & Nature Study, History, Geography, Political Science, Lalit Kala & Paper Craft, and Ceramics. Engaging in hobbies builds knowledge, skill, and character in a relaxed, enjoyable setting, enriching the students' overall development.

Educational Excursion

Outings and excursions are valuable educational tools that broaden students' perspectives, allowing them to learn beyond the classroom. Such experiences encourage teamwork, self-confidence, and a sense of responsibility, while exposure to diverse environments helps develop an appreciation for nature, history, and culture. At Ramakrishna Mission Vidyapith, annual excursions are organized for all students, who travel in groups to locations of natural beauty or sites of religious, historical, or industrial significance. These trips enrich students' understanding of their heritage and world. Additionally, local outings to nearby Shiva temples and nature parks are held on Bengali New Year’s Day, giving students a chance to connect with their cultural roots. Together, these excursions foster personal growth, inspire curiosity, and instil a broad-minded outlook, all while reinforcing values that students carry with them throughout life.

Social Service Camp

The Annual Social Service Camp at Ramakrishna Mission Vidyapith offers senior students a unique opportunity to contribute to rural development in Purulia. Over three to four days, students gain firsthand experience of life in remote Indian villages, participating in community upliftment projects like repairing walls, building wells, setting up classrooms, and conducting socio-economic surveys. Through activities such as whitewashing, painting, and organizing music classes, students actively support local communities while developing a deeper understanding of rural life and the impact of service, fostering a sense of empathy and responsibility.

Naranarayan Seva

The annual Naranarayan Seva at Ramakrishna Mission Vidyapith embodies Sri Ramakrishna’s ideal of serving God in Man, providing an opportunity for students and faculty to serve the poverty-stricken people of Purulia. During this remarkable event, villagers from across Purulia gather in thousands to receive khichuri prasad as a blessing and symbol of care. The students of classes VII to X, guided by their teachers and organized into dedicated groups, serve khichuri, curry, chutney, sweets, and payesh to all attendees. This day is celebrated with devotion, reflecting the principle of seeing Shiva in Jiva, or God in each individual, fostering a spirit of selfless service and humility in students. Naranarayan Seva is one of the most cherished events in Vidyapith’s calendar, leaving a lasting impact on students and embodying the mission’s commitment to community upliftment and spiritual growth.

Relief Camp

In response to the challenging living conditions in the remote villages of Purulia, Ramakrishna Mission Vidyapith extends compassionate support through regular Relief Camp activities. During winter, Vidyapith organizes clothing and blanket donations to help families facing seasonal hardships, with small teams of monks and teachers personally delivering these essentials to the villages. This work is rooted in a spirit of service, aiming to uplift vulnerable communities while fostering a sense of unity and shared humanity. Beyond these seasonal efforts, Vidyapith also mobilizes resources during crises, setting up relief camps to support affected villagers during natural disasters, pandemics, and other emergencies. Through these ongoing efforts, Vidyapith not only addresses immediate needs but also builds bridges of trust and solidarity, integrating the villages into a spirit of national unity and fraternity that aligns with the institution's core values.
